Summary

Two-day variant

  • Saigon to Mui Ne
  • Mui Ne to Dalat

Three-day variant (recommended)

  • Saigon to Ho Tram
  • Ho Tram to Mui Ne
  • Mui Ne to Dalat

The two day Saigon to Dalat through Mui Ne is an ambitious two-day dual-sport tour. The distances are long, the tour is rushed, but we make it work.

The three-day variant, on the other hand, runs at a reasonably relaxed pace.

Be it the two or three-day route, what makes this tour unique is the quantity of driving terrain we get to drive through. It keeps you on your toes, and never gets boring.

Tour Highlights

  • Sand driving, gravel driving, jungle driving
  • Easy exit points for when you get tired
  • Difficulty levels from beginner to expert, the guide can cater to all
  • Super high-speed action and open terrain in some areas. Very fun!
  • Extremely good accommodation and food in Mui Ne!
  • Beautiful jungle rides, particularly on day two

Who this tour is for

The two-day variant of this tour needs to be for intermediate to advanced riders. This is due to the number of kilometers covered on day one. Beginners can do it with the right attitude, but it will mentally and physically exhaust you. Feel free to sign up and explain that you are willing to give it a go!

The three-day variant can suit all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. The pacing is much more relaxed.

Overall, there is nothing particularly difficult on this tour, but sand driving (which is optional) tends to reveal a rider’s weakness if you have poor technique. You might think you’re the world’s greatest driver, but if you’re not, the sand will definitely let you know! It can be a soul-crushing experience for a lot of people and a very real reality check!
Some might blame the bike, but the guide is on the same bike, and he can do the sand. Go figure!

In the end, most clients will struggle with sand driving, so tour guides tend to keep this section very short. They give you a shot at it, prove a point that you need more practice, and then move on with the route. However, if you are an advanced rider, there is a lot of fast-paced sand driving to be had.

Similarly, as we near Dalat, there are some relatively steep hill climbs. Nothing crazy, and a beginner can hack their way up with help from a guide. Advanced riders will get a kick out of taking a 150cc motorbike up fairly steep terrain through pine forests. This is weather permitting, though, as the clay we experience in Vietnam can cause the terrain to turn into ice.

Overall, it doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or an advanced rider. Day one will have you thinking you are the greatest driver on planet earth, because the speeds are quick and the terrain is easy. Day two will bring you crashing back down to earth as the sand and hill climbs get you. What a roller coaster of a ride!

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

HCM to Mui Ne

Day one of this tour is long; there is no escaping the reality that Mui Ne is around a 230km drive from Ho Chi Minh. Nonetheless, most of the off-roading here is fast-paced, open, gravelly, or jungle terrain.
You will blast through rubber plantations, gravel tracks, jump over train tracks, and hit light sand.

Whilst nothing is difficult here, the sheer number of kilometres tends to wipe clients out. It does make the evening beer extra special though. If possible, this drive should be broken up into two days (see the Ho Tram variant below).

Accommodation day 1

We use a villa owned by friends of Tigit Motorbikes. Built as a private property, essentially a second holiday home. Large with a private swimming pool and free beer in the fridge.
Dinner is in a market square where you can choose pizza, Mexican, vegetarian, or Vietnamese food.

Day 2

Mui Ne to Dalat

The day can start with some challenging sand driving if you wish. Or this can be skipped by using a gravel road through windmills. Sand eventually turns to pine forests as Dalat creeps closer. You will find yourself on some steep hill climbs with rewarding views at the top.

Crazy people with bag loads of skill or a death wish may request Ta Nang backward into the ridgeline route, but that will require Tigit Jon as a guide. Send an email if you want to inquire about a custom price.

Farewells

The tour aims to finish in Dalat at 6pm, but this is flexible.
From here you can bus back to HCM, fly back to HCM, or pickup a road bike from Tigit Dalat to continue your onward journey. (Options not included in the tour).

Day

Optional day 2

Ho Chi Minh to Mui Ne is a very long drive. Even with skipping out on lots of offroading, the sheer distance means the day is a rush and pressured.

Therefore, adding in this extra day allows for a more relaxed and appropriate pacing. It also allows the guide to maximise the good off-road opportunities instead of just choosing the straightest route.

Ho Tram is one of the nearest coastal towns to Ho Chi Minh, and here you can experience small sand dune riding and even beach riding.

Adding this day, setsup the Ho Tram to Mui Ne option to allow all the best offroading on that route, instead of skipping it out.
The entire tour dynamic changes from a very rushed two day route, to a pretty casually paced three day route!
