Tour Pictures & Video

Summary

The tour can be done in both directions, but it is probably best experienced starting in Ha Giang.

The minimum here is four days, but you can add many extra days, as this route connects directly into our North West Aggressive Dual Sport route, which alone is a potential seven-day drive. You can build this tour out to as many days as you like.

On this route, we go through quite a few different provinces. You will see the scenery change, and the ethnic minority dress codes change as well. Overall, we are covering quite a bit of ground, and so the landscapes change with it.

Ha Giang is very famous these days, but all the tourists head East. So we will do the opposite and head West. It is funny, really, because the West is far more beautiful!

Whilst all of the North is stunning rice paddy territory, I think this region around Hoang Su Phi is probably the hub of it and definitely the most dramatic.
I thought it would be impossible to get sick and tired of seeing rice paddies. But this tour gave me a good run for my money on that. “Oh, another rice paddy”. Nice.

Tour Highlights

  • More rice paddies than you need to see in your lifetime
  • Very remote regions, where we get up close and inside the rice paddies
  • Covering quite a lot of ground, so we see different regions
  • Climbing one of the tallest mountains in the North, 1200M, and it’s off-road! I don’t think most tourists do things like that!

Who this tour is for

Ideally, this tour is for intermediate to advanced riders with a fair amount of passion for off-road.

Having said that, due to the sheer beauty of the area, the tour guide can actually cut out basically all of the off-road, and this will remain a truly spectacular ride.

Ultimately, you are in control. The tour has a lot of off-road built into it, not all of it easy, but in the end, it is all completely optional.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Ha Giang to Hoang Su Phi

No hanging about on this one, literally straight out of Ha Giang you are thrown into the middle of nowhere on a jungle run. Maybe within fifteen minutes of getting on the bike.
None of it is hard, but it really sets the tone for the tour. This is an offroad tour and there is alot of it, and you are very much away from the tourist circuit!

As the day progresses, we actually go more into civilization, to the very populated Hoang Su Phi region. It is the hub of rice paddies and, therefore, quite a lot of people are around, all of whom are farmers. It is high up as well and very often in the clouds.

Whilst accommodation is fairly nice here, it is a bit of a culture shock as it is a Vietnamese-style homestay. Generally, at Tigit, we tend to keep the accommodations quite Western-style, but this area doesn’t have much tourism passing through.

Day 2

Hoang Su Phi to Bac Ha

We continue west toward the town of Bac Ha. Climbing over Kiou Leou Ti Mountain, which is 1200m high. My GPS recorded a vertical ascent of 4591m. It felt like we would never stop going uphill!
Half of this mountain is paved, half of it is off-road, and it’s not easy at that.
Truly amazing driving to be had here.
We then finish the day in the town of Bac Ha, which is a very popular town for homestays, and our tour guides seem to love it.

Day 3

Bac Ha to Tram Tau

From Bac Ha we turn South and cover a lot of kilometres over relatively flat farmland. You get to really appreciate that, to the side of highways, are little villages living in fairly rough conditions. Struggling with thick clay that won’t go away.
For us, blasting through the terrain on dirt bikes is amazing fun, but it’s clear to see how the local way of life is struggling with the conditions. Clay is no joke!

There is a lot of singletrack through the mountains where the locals attempt to build tiny roads for Honda Wave scooters, but these often get washed out by landslides, and so you can go from very slippery tarmac to full-blown off-road in seconds.

I believe that for many people, this day is an eye-opening experience.

The day concludes in Nghia Lo or with an extra hour of driving to my favorite town, Tram Tau, where a hot spring awaits. The perfect end to the day!

Day 4

Tram Tau to Hanoi

It is here in Tram Tau that we have connected to Tigits North West Aggressive Dual sport route. We know this area like the back of our hands and have the potential to add another seven days to the tour, right from this town.

If you want to stop at four days, the final day will have a mild piece of off-road before hitting the roads all the way back to Hanoi.

This should be considered a day for road riding.
