The best motorbike rental in Hanoi

The best motorbike rental in Hanoi
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Renting a motorbike in Hanoi is more common than renting a motorbike in Ho Chi Minh. Most travelers will start in Hanoi, and there is a good reason for this. Hanoi has instant access to the entire North of Vietnam, which has up to three weeks of spectacular mountain driving. Hanoi is also a city with fierce competition among motorbike rental agencies, so the prices are often lower than in Ho Chi Minh.

Tigit is the best motorbike rental company in Hanoi. Despite this, I will share some love with other motorcycle rental agencies and suggest where they specialize in areas that we perhaps fall miss out on!

Tigit Motorbikes

We specialize in the idea of a motorcycle rental from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh. Travelers can pick up a motorbike in one city and dropoff a motorbike in another city. We have offices all over the country and a vast support network for helping drivers in distress when things go wrong in remote locations.

Style Motorbikes

Style is our main competitor in the market for Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh motorbike rentals. They differ from Tigit in using Chinese Honda Win motorcycles. They also buy up older rental motorbikes from companies such as Tigit.

Flamingo Travel

Flamingo Travel specializes in tours, and they have been in business since Vietnam opened to tourists. Through the years, they have slowly grown into motorbike rentals. They offer a wide range of random large-capacity motorbikes that would have been in use for many years. Flamingo is excellent for the opportunity of trying a motorbike that might be familiar back home, but it comes with the compromise of plenty of miles attached to the motorbike.

RentaBike

Rentabike focuses on the expat market with monthly scooter rentals for people living and working in Hanoi city. They appear to offer some motorbikes for long-distance motorbike rentals. However, I am unfamiliar with anyone using their service for long journeys.

Phung Motorbikes

A mechanic shop that also offers motorbike rentals for niche large-capacity machines. Through the years, they have collected a wide variety of random motorbikes for renting. The consequence comes with the unknown age and an enormous number of miles attached to the motorbike.

Things to do on a motorbike rental in Hanoi City

How much does a motorbike rental cost in Hanoi City?

There are plenty of cheap motorbike rentals in Hanoi, and a scooter can cost as little as $5 a day. Traveling outside of Hanoi city or Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh trips, expect to spend $10 a day or $250 for a month on a cheap scooter.

For large capacity motorbikes such as the Honda CRF 250 or other offroad motorbikes, the prices start at $35 a day and head upward. There is a wide variety of conditions and legalities when it comes to these bigger motorbikes. Many of them only rented around the North due to fake papers. The rental companies won’t allow them to do Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh journeys.

How to choose the best motorbike rental company in Hanoi

Hanoi is the city where motorbike rentals began and thrived. There are hundreds of small motorbike rental shops that were once successful motorbike tour companies. Mostly run by mechanics or motorcycle enthusiasts who were quick to become tour guides when Vietnam first opened its doors to tourism.

Fierce competition in Hanoi has seen these early adopters slowly diminish through the years. What remains are very old motorbike rentals with little spare cash for maintenance.

When looking for the best motorbike rental in Hanoi, it is worth looking at the time frames. There are plenty of modern motorbike rental agencies, such as Tigit that have a western-style service and a modern fleet of motorbikes.

Should you rent a motorbike in Hanoi?

Hanoi is a busy city with limited parking. It probably isn’t worth renting a motorbike for staying in Hanoi city, but it is definitely worth renting to travel outside the city. A three-hour drive can have you in spectacular locations such as Ninh Binh, Pu Luong, or the North in general.  To legally drive in Vietnam, you need a license and international driver’s permit. However, many travelers drive around with no paperwork at all.
